After studying for an Engineering degree at Nottingham University, a somewhat misguided Dan Hill jumped on the gravy train with many of his contemporaries and headed to London to seek his fortune.
It was during periods of reflection whilst sat at his desk in the City bank where he worked that Dan dreamed up New Red Furniture and sought to turn this dream into reality.
There followed an intense period of study with a master craftsman in Devon and then some time for Dan to hone his woodworking and design skills.
The dining table is traditionally the heart of any home, at which there are meals had, plans hatched, friendships forged, disputes settled, homework done, events celebrated.
If dining tables had ears, the tales they could tell.
It is not something that is bought on a whim, rather an investment for life.
At New Red we're developing a range of contemporary European oak dining tables (with or without benches or chairs) hand-crafted with all the care and attention to detail they deserve.
If you are interested in any of our existing designs, these can be made to any size to meet your needs.
The process starts with a client meeting.
Some have a clear idea of what they want, some very little.
Either way the design process can be quite engaging.
We produce drawings and sometimes models to arrive at something that we want to make and the client wants to have in their house.
Once we have agreed a design, a commitment by way of a 30% deposit enables us source timber and books your place in our workshop schedule.
You are aways welcome to come and visit during production.
The brief for a "loveseat" was provided by local clients to mark their marriage.
The basic form was inspired by a fireside chair viewed in a house at the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans, Cardiff.
Two chairs are joined together to form one garden seat.
The backs of the seats are inscribed with some words from "Rev Eli Jenkin's Prayer" from Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas.
The carving was done by a renowned wood carver and Welsh love spoons maker.
The air-dried Welsh oak (Quercus Robur) originated in Monmouthshire and was milled and seasoned on the Gower.
We've increasingly been engaged by clients to build fitted furniture, bookcases, wardrobes, media units and the occasional kitchen.
These can be natural oil finishes or hand-painted eggshell, giving the piece a warmth and textured quality lost in spray painted mdf.
Transform an awkward space or alcove into something useful and enhance your house at the same time.
The following are a few examples of the sort of work undertaken but each project is unique and imagination the only limiting factor.
We provide a fully bespoke design, make and installation service.
