William Cowley Parchment Makers
For the last twenty five years or so I have completed many calligraphy and illuminating commissions on Cowley's vellum. I find that the excellent quality of their skins does not change. The staff always take great care to ensure that the skins selected are suited to the purpose. Parchment and Vellum are remarkable materials with truly unique qualities; used worldwide to create exceptional products, works of art and special documents.

Our Parchment & Vellum is used for: Calligraphy and Illumination, Bookbinding, Botanical Art, Heraldic Art, Memorial Books, Drum Making and Lampshades. We offer a bespoke vellum covering service for furniture, wall and door panels; and a document printing service for Certificates, Diplomas, Family Trees etc. Since 1870, over four generations, William Cowley has been producing genuine, hand-crafted, Parchment and Vellum of the finest quality, using time-honoured methods largely unchanged for centuries.

Our natural products can literally last for centuries which is unlikely with so called 'parchment paper' imitations!
Services
A Family Business making the finest quality Parchment & Vellum since 1870, over four generations.
Our family business is proud to have been in continuous production of Parchment and Vellum for over 140 years at our riverside premises in the small market town of Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire.
Mr William Cowley had begun making parchment under a disused railway arch in the 1860s, one of at least five similar businesses in the town at the time.
Such was his success, that by 1870, he had been able to build new premises at the present site and take on a number of employees.
Available in 3 main forms Natural, 'White' (creamy white) and Dyed (several colours available to order) each displaying Goatskin Vellum's prominent grain structure.
This grain structure is unique to each skin; the variations in colour, texture and pattern being more noticeable in the Natural than the White Goatskin Vellum.
Dying a goatskin will also enhance its unique grain features.
NB: The traditional 'White' goatskins are bleached and their colour varies from stark white to a warm creamy colour.
White or light cream in colour and usable on both sides, Sheepskin Parchment is generally lighter and thinner than vellum.
William Cowley is the only commercial manufacturer of genuine Sheepskin Parchment in the UK.
We only use the very best sheepskins available.
We always personally select our sheepskins from our suppliers employing rigorous selection criteria.
Typically we accept only the best 10% of available sheepskins as suitable for making our top quality Parchment.
Sheepskin Parchment is primarily used as material for writing, printing and document repair.
We can dye vellums in a variety of colours and effects for individual projects.
Dyed Goatskin Vellum is a popular and exciting alternative for Interior Designers.
We can cover furniture, wall or door panels with either natural or dyed vellum, providing a wholly unique fashion alternative to wood finishes, paint and wallpaper.
Very attractive finishes and effects can be achieved.
Goatskin Vellum is the primary material used for Dyed Vellum.
As an entirely natural material, no two skins have exactly the same grain structure and subtle natural variations will occur, not only from skin to skin but also within a single piece.
William Cowley is pleased to offer a Vellum Covering Service to Interior Designers and bespoke Furniture Makers.
The use of natural or dyed Vellum for covering a wide range of furniture is at the forefront of modern cutting-edge design.
Vellum works well with a whole variety of desks, tables, bedroom suites, cupboards, drawer units etc.
It will mould to convex shapes without cutting.
Similarly Vellum wall or door panels provide a wholly unique fashion alternative to paint and wallpaper!
