With The Grain was set up in 2010 by Lucinda Edmonds, but started growing more quickly in 2014 when her husband Richard joined full-time.
Our aim is to provide a local & personal service to all our clients, however small or large the project.
We love our work and take pride in everything we make and restore.
We have worked with clients all over the UK, and have some quite well-known and prestigious names on that list.
They all have in common a love of good furniture, whether that means design and build, or restoring an older, much-loved piece.

We know there is so much choice available these days of standard bulk-manufactured furniture being traded all around the world.
However, we also know there is a time and a place for some items to be created according to your particular requirement.
It might be for a special item to take pride and place in your home, a gift for someone special, or it could be an unusual location that requires something to be custom-designed to fit a particular place.
In the commercial or office environment the same thing applies.

Between them Lucinda and Richard have covered so many items, and styles, it's impossible to share them all.
At the design stage a lot of issues will have been covered and we will make sure that the techniques being used will create a piece perfectly in keeping with its environment.
This might mean matching it to existing pieces of furniture in terms of jointing or finish as well as its overall style.

Lucinda and Richard are both very experienced restorers of wood furniture, with many specialities in their combined decades of experience.
Restoration techniques can be applied to antique and older furniture of high value, but they can also be applied to well used, less valuable and more recent items of furniture.

Restoration covers the external appearance of the wood, so includes all polishing, painting, varnishing and lacquering techniques, but we also cover structural renovation, repairs, replacement of components etc.
