Natural East, formally known as People Tree is based in North Norfolk, UK. The roots of People Tree originate from the misty spring of 1994 travelling India in the vain attempt of finding oneself, not only finding our vocation in life, (our appreciation of handicrafts), but also meandering from one village to another meeting immensely skilled craftsmen and women with whom we are still friends and business partners with to this day.
After a couple of years supplying businesses around the UK with block printed textiles we opened our first shop in Holt in Norfolk in the spring of 1996, over the years this has enabled my wife and I and our children to travel Asia in more depth and procure a broad range of unusual items. Wherever possible we like to meet and do business with craft folk direct and other times we scour the bazaars of Asia for the peculiar and curious.
By meeting and working closely with our suppliers and visiting the places where the products are made and come from directly, we feel confident that the workers and home makers are treated fairly and paid well.

Most of my travels are done by motorcycle; nearly all of my purchasing is done in this way.
Although we are not fair trade under the guise of any organisation we do try to source our products in an ethical manner.
Usually I come across a product scouring the bazaars of Asia.
On returning, if a product sells, I will take the time to hunt out where the product is manufactured, it usually takes a bit of 'investigative sourcing' this will take me to some very surprising places, - a slum in the north of Delhi where in amidst the chaos a small cottage industry syndicate are weaving their way out of poverty, or an almost forgotten village on an island in the Indonesian archipelago where they are keeping a potter's tradition alive.
